April is National Donate Life Month!

April is here, and we can hardly believe it! As many of you know, April is National Donate Life, and The Living Legacy Foundation and Donate Life Maryland are very excited about all the donation awareness events and programs we have going on to raise awareness about organ, eye and tissue donation and drive donor designation. We encourage everyone to participate in at least one of our awareness events this April, whether it is in honor of a donor, in celebration of a transplant, or in support of our life-saving cause:

Mall Displays and Donation Drives – April 1st
Living Legacy and Donate Life Maryland staff, along with our Donate Life Ambassadors, will be hosting information booths and registering people as organ, eye and tissue donors from 12pm-6pm at Towson, White Marsh, Columbia and Mondawmin malls. Be sure to stop by if you are at one of these locations on April 1st!

Be Seen in Green Day – April 4th
Wear green in support of organ, eye and tissue donation all day, and encourage your friends and family to do so as well! Feel free to get creative with your green ensembles and customize them however you’d like, and don’t forget to post pictures to the Donate Life Maryland Facebook Page or tweet them @DonateLifeMD so we can see you sharing your support! Click here to view the Facebook event page for this day. If you join the event, you will get a reminder to wear your green on April 4th!

Donate Life America’s I Am Hope campaign – April 15th-21st
This year, Donate Life America is having each state showcase stories of those touched by donation and transplantation for a week on their social media sites. Donate Life Maryland will be posting stories about Marylanders touched by donation every day from April 15-21 on the Donate Life Maryland Facebook page. Make sure to “like” the page so you can read these inspirational stories!

Flags Across Maryland – All month long
Hospitals, community partners, and families across Maryland will be flying the Donate Life flag in support of all organ, eye and tissue donors during the month of April. Keep an eye out for them, and post pictures to the Donate Life Maryland Facebook page if you happen to see any! (Don’t forget to tell us the location, in case it isn’t obvious!) Contact us at communications@thellf.org if you’d like to get involved with Flags across Maryland and fly a Donate Life flag this April.

Donate Life Maryland’s Who’s Your Hero? Campaign– All month long
Can you identify the local celebrities in Donate Life Maryland’s Who’s Your Hero ads? The ads will feature well-known Marylanders who also happen to be designated organ, eye and tissue donors and will be able to be found on bus shelters throughout Baltimore. They can also be found on the Donate Life Maryland Facebook page. Leave a comment to guess who these local heroes are! Correct guesses will be eligible to win fun Donate Life Maryland gear.

Hospital Donor Registry Challenge – All month long
This April, Donate Life Maryland is launching the first Hospital Donor Registry Challenge to sign up organ, eye and tissue donors at hospitals across the state. The challenge will begin April 1st and conclude April 30th. There will be awards given to the hospitals who created the “Best Internal Promotion” and “Best External Promotion,” and awards will be given to hospitals based on size.  Hospitals: contact your hospital services coordinator or e-mail hospitalservices@thellf.org for more information.

Take a Minute, Save a Life Public Service Announcement – All month long

Wide receiver Torrey Smith will be featured in a public service announcement airing this April to promote the Maryland donor registry. Keep an eye out for this creative campaign encouraging others to “take a minute, save a life” by registering as organ, eye and tissue donors.

NEW Facebook Cover Photos! – Ongoing
Do you need a new cover photo for your Facebook timeline? Donate Life Maryland has created some cheeky Facebook cover photos so you can use the top of your Facebook profile page to encourage others to register as organ, eye and tissue donors. Check them out here, and feel free to use and share them!

In addition to all these exciting events and campaigns, The Living Legacy Foundation, in partnership with Donate Life Maryland, will also be working to place as many donation-related stories in the news (print, online, and radio) throughout the month of April. We will also be giving presentations and hosting information booths at health fairs, schools, churches and in MVA branches across the state, so look for us and our dedicated volunteers as we work hard to raise awareness and register donors all month long!

Would you like to get involved and celebrate Donate Life Month with us? Here are some other ideas about how to do your part to educate the public about donation during National Donate Life Month:

Hold a Donor Designation Drive
This is an easy way to increase the number of donors on the Maryland state registry and have fun while doing so! All you need is a table set up somewhere in your school/office/hospital/restaurant, etc. We can provide staff (free  of charge) to be available to help answer questions about donation and register people on the donor registry. We will also come with some fun giveaways because seriously – who doesn’t love free stuff?!

Host a Donation Presentation
Again, this is another way to educate the public about donation free of charge. Our staff is trained to speak about and answer questions regarding donation in many different settings, including high school and college classrooms, club meetings, hospitals, conferences, etc. Let us know if you’d like to set up a presentation with us.

Fly a Donate Life Flag!
Contact us at communications@thellf.org if you’d like to get involved with Flags across Maryland and fly a Donate Life flag this April.

We love Donate Life Month and are constantly looking for great ways to celebrate. If you’re interested in joining us in our month-long celebration of second chances and the incredible gift of life, please contact us at communications@thellf.org, 443-833-1015 for more information.

About Lauren

Lauren Muskauski is the communications associate at The Living Legacy Foundation. She heads up many community outreach initiatives and projects, with a focus on middle school, high school and college outreach. She also manages The LLF’s and Donate Life Maryland’s presence on social networking sites, such as Twitter and Facebook. Lauren’s commitment to donation started early when she registered as an organ, eye and tissue donor at the MVA upon receiving her first drivers’ license, but was then reinforced a few years later when her father passed away while waiting for a liver transplant. Now, she continues to be inspired on a daily basis by the generosity of donors and their families, as well as the gratitude exhibited by every recipient she meets.
