With more than 111,000 people nationally awaiting a life saving organ transplant, including nearly 2,100 friends and neighbors in Maryland, the need for organ and tissue donors is great. Sadly, almost half of those waiting locally are African-Americans in need of a kidney transplant. And while there are more than 1,000 African Americans waiting for a life-saving organ transplant in Maryland, in 2010, only 43 African Americans became organ donors.
The purpose of this event is to educate our community about the critical need for African-Americans to designate themselves as organ donors. We hope by reaching out though church communities, we will continue to overcome common donation myths in the community and help those more than 1,000 African Americans get off the waiting list.
This is a free event showcasing many talented choirs, including:
- New Psalmist Baptist Church Choir
- St. John’s AME Church – Unity Choir
- DJ Fella & Anointed Voices
- Sheldon Brown
- Manuel Ringgold
